july 2014 | oslo, norway (Akershus Castle) part 3 / 4

Posted on 7/28/2014

Our second day in Oslo we were booked to go on a bus tour. But the thought of being on a bus instead of walking around the city (it was a kind of rainy, but not that rainy -especially for a bunch of Oregonians!- day) was pretty unappealing. So even thought we would have technically seen "more" of the city on the bus (for example they went to some of the old Olympic ski jumps and a famous park with some sculptures that are both somewhat outside the city center), we decided to ditch the bus and just walk around the city near the water.

It was a great idea. ...it was my idea.... just saying :)

The day before we had noticed that there were people walking around the old castle, so we headed there first. It was around 830am, and we were pretty much the only people there. It was awesome.
^ Mom & Josh on our way up to the Castle/ Fortress. It was a Castle first, then a fortress later.

I thought the hodgepodge of buildings were interesting... they were clearly all built at different times, over the course of about 600 years.

The paths up to the "top" :

And the view!!! Easy to see why this was a great spot to defend the city.

We mostly wandered around with out much purpose for about an hour looking at all the buildings. It was really empty the whole time.

Despite the fact that the morning wasn't jammed packed with ski jumps and parks with sculptures this was one of my favorite times of the trip. Walking around a deserted castle with just my Mom and brother talking and laughing beats a bus tour any day. After this, we went to a cute little coffee shop and relaxed for a bit... no matter where I am in a new city I always prefer to just walk, anywhere. It's not always about how much you can see, but about how you see it. (Also it helps offset all the deliciously unhealthy food, which is nice, too.)
